Most Successful Team Program: 1996-2006, 2008-2015

Airborne’s Elite Program From The Beginning

In 1999 Melissa Chan, at the age of 12, placed 5th AA at the American Classic and qualified to be part of the US National Team. The following year she was the US Junior Vault Champion and the only junior athlete to compete a Yurchenko double full on the old vaulting horse. Placing 4th on beam, 5th on floor and 8th AA, she qualified to the US National Team and was given an assignment to represent our country in Paris, France. She made quite an impression competing original difficult skills, such as a front half mount on beam.

After a few years as an Elite gymnast Melissa decided to drop back to Level 10 where she won 3 in a row Junior Olympic National AA Titles (2002, 2003 and 2004) –she is only one of two athletes to accomplish such a feat. Melissa went on to compete for UCLA and is now working in Los Gatos as a CPA.
In 2004, Carol Chang qualified as a National Elite and eventually had a successful collegiate career as a Cal Gymnast. She is now in medical school.

In 2010, Desi Borqese came through the TOPS program and qualified for the VISA Championships. In 2011, she qualified for the US Developmental Training Squad. Desi was a passionate, talented athlete that many young girls in the gym looked up to. She is currently studying at the University of Arizona.

Sydney Buerk & Jacquie Moran for qualifying for National TOPs testing at the National Training Center in Texas

Airborne’s TOPS Program – The Dream starts here

In October of 2012, Emma Malabuyo, Kaitlyn Lyle, and Maiya Nishime attended TOPs national testing in Huntsville, Texas after qualifying at the state level. These gymnasts were among the 250 test participants between the ages of 8-10. Emma and Kaitlyn qualified for the TOPs National Team and Maiya qualified for the TOPs B team.

The next step after TOPS…

The girls were first selected for the opportunity to attend their first Developmental Camp back in November after a successful TOPs season. Athletes are selected by invitation only and spots are limited, it is truly an honor and an achievement to be selected. January 2013 was their first Developmental Camp at the USAG Women’s National Training Center in Huntsville, Texas. The focus of these camps is to keep athletes on a development-training plan. The USA Gymnastics National Staff work with the athletes and their coaches to ensure that they receive specific instruction on optional skills, training tips, and technique that will guide them to enter into the Elite/National level. The program is under direction of Valeri Luikin.

The girls made quite an impact in January, which resulted in an invitation to the March Camp. They stood out yet again at the recent March camp, which earned them a 3rd invite to the Development camp in May! Kaitlyn & Emma we know how hard you have worked and we just want to say, way to go! All your coaches and teammates at Airborne are so proud of you both!
